How tipping percentages work
The tip amount is simply the bill multiplied by the chosen percentage. In the US, 15–20% is standard for full-service dining; 10% is common for casual service in some regions, and tipping norms vary widely outside the US. To split a shared bill fairly, add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people at the table — that way everyone pays an equal share of both the food and the tip, regardless of who ordered what.
